歐盟指令 92/75 / EC [1]制定了能源消費標籤制度。因此大多數白色家電，燈泡包裝和汽車必須在提供出售或出租時明確顯示歐盟能源標籤。能效設備的能效等級從A至G的標籤，A是最節能，G效率最低。標籤還可以在客戶選擇各種型號之間提供其他有用的信息。
為了跟上能源效率的進步，後來推出了A +、A ++以及A +++等級
能源標籤分為至少四類：
· 設備的詳細信息：根據每個設備，具體細節，型號及其材料
· 能量等級：與一個字母相關聯的顏色代碼（從A到G），可以了解設備的電氣消耗
· 消耗，效率，容量等：本節根據設備類型提供信息
· 噪音：設備發出的噪音以分貝為單位
