為提高消費者意識，印度政府自1991年起開始推動一項稱為"Ecomark"之環保標章計畫，以使消費者易於辨識環保產品。因此，任何在原料取得、產品製造、使用或丟棄過程中可明顯減少其對環境破壞之產品，皆可被視為係環保產品。"Ecomark"環保標章係頒授予符合印度品質要求及特殊環保標準之產品。任何具有"Ecomark"環保標章之產品，皆係環境保護之最佳選擇。

印度生態標章主要針對消費型產品，目前已公布16類產品之標準，包括：肥皂、除臭劑、紙、食品、潤滑油、包裝材料、建築用漆、電纜被覆、電池、電力及電子用品、食品添加物、木材替代品、化妝品、噴霧殺蟲劑、塑膠製品、紡織品、滅火器、皮製品等。
在驗證許可有效期限內，BIS會派員進行不定期檢查，包括抽樣產品進行現場與第三方測試，以確保該產品符合相關規定。

可以鼓勵消費者購買對環境衝擊較小的產品，最終達到改善環境品質，資源永續利用的目的。
